Sean Tyson
Tyson began his formal training in the theatre three years before he entered the York University’s Fine Arts program in 1990, where he broadened his studies from architecture and acting to include dance, photography, painting, set and lighting design. After earning an Honours BFA he immediately went to work in the professional theatre community of Toronto as Technical Director of Leah Posluns Theatre. During his three year tenure there, he also worked in the corporate world of entertainment, rock & roll and film television, joining ACTRA in 1996.
Through the late 1990’s Tyson continued to work for small and large theatres alike as a designer, crew chief, actor and collaborative creator. He became the resident LX designer of the Shakespearean theatre company Tempest while a member of its ensemble cast and went on to design their Ontario/Quebec tour for Repercussion Theatre. He has held positions as Production Manager, Technical Director, Associate Production Manager, Associate Technical Director, Assistant Stage Manager and Crew Chief on high profile events such as the Molson Indy Dinner, Chinese New Year Celebrations, the B&W Polo Ball, CityTV’s New Year’s Eve Celebration, as well as the Israel, Dinosaur and Sport pavilions at the Canadian National Exhibition. During this time he also worked regularly for MCA, Universal and helped set international records at the Molson Amphitheatre as a key member of their loading crew.
In 2001, Tyson relocated to Vancouver to focus on acting. Since that time he has amassed an impressive resume on locally filmed television shows including SG-1, SG-Atlantis, Reaper, The L-Word, Intelligence, DaVinci’s and Smallville. He has also had the good fortune to have worked with several international stars on feature films such as Married Life, 2012, Frankie&Alice, The Pink Panther and License to Wed. Balancing his ongoing pursuit of professional work in this field, Tyson has continued to support emerging talent by lending his dedication and experience to independent and student film makers in the Vancouver area. Whether as an actor, assistant director, special FX, rigger or producer he has worked with several young directors who have gone on to win numerous awards.
While pursuing work in film & television he has continued his dedication to theatre, helping raise the profile of several companies about town through design work and acting. Most recently he has been Technical Director for the Evolving Arts Collective since 2006, having designed and performed on their stage since its 2004 inception.
